From the Principal's Desk

Dear Ormeau Woods Community,
As we approach the end of another great term, I am delighted to share some exciting updates and celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students, staff, and wider school community.
Academic Excellence and Assessment
Our students from Years 7 to 12 have been working diligently on their assessment tasks, demonstrating commitment and resilience as they strive to achieve their best. With Semester 1 reporting just around the corner early next term, it has been wonderful to see students engaging with their learning and seeking feedback to further their academic progress. I encourage all families to continue supporting their children through this busy period, ensuring they are well-prepared for the final weeks of assessment.
Recognition of Our School’s Success
I am extremely proud to announce that Ormeau Woods State High School has been recognised for its sustained academic improvement over the past four years. Our results have shown a consistent upward trajectory, and this has not gone unnoticed. The Queensland State School Reviews Team has identified Ormeau Woods as a ‘Spotlight School’—a testament to the dedication of our staff, students, and families.
Next term, Mr Silcock and I will have the privilege of showcasing the wonderful work of our school community at the Public Schools Alliance Conference. We will be presenting to over 150 school and system leaders, sharing our journey and the strategies that have contributed to our success. This recognition is something we can all be proud of.
Ormeaulympics Athletic Carnival
Yesterday, our annual ‘Ormeaulympics’ athletic carnival was held, and what a fantastic day it was! The spirit and enthusiasm on display from students and staff alike truly embodied the heart of our school. It was wonderful to see so many students participating, cheering on their peers, and embracing the values of teamwork and healthy competition. Congratulations to all involved for making the day such a memorable event.
Facilities Update: MPC Upgrades and Oval Master Planning
We continue to invest in the future of our school with ongoing upgrades to our Multi-Purpose Centre (MPC). These enhancements will provide our students with improved facilities for both learning and extracurricular activities. In addition, we are in the process of master planning for our school oval to ensure it meets the growing needs of our community. We look forward to sharing more details with you as these projects progress.
Finally, congratulations to our Year 12 students who will be celebrating at their school formal next week, a wonderful culmination of their high schooling efforts. Also, Thank you for your continued support of Ormeau Woods State High School. Together, we are building a vibrant and successful learning community. I wish everyone a productive end to the term and a wonderful Semester break.
Warmest Regards,
Dan Murtas
Principal

Head of School Update

Hello and welcome to the Head of School section of our Term 2, Week 9 newsletter.
As we near the end of Semester 1, our students and staff are deep in assessment mode. After weeks of explicit teaching, feedback on drafts and refining their learning, this marks a key juncture in the academic calendar, where we begin to see how our collective efforts in curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy have supported students in striving toward their personal best.
Following our Term 1 interim reporting, we had much to celebrate.
As the snapshot below shows, our students made a flying start to 2025, achieving record results for Term 1 since our school’s opening in 2009. This strong foundation set the tone for the semester, and our focus since has been to maintain this momentum and lift achievement across targeted areas in Years 7 to 11.
How are we going? - Whole School (7-12)
School Benchmarks: A = 20% A-B = 55% A-C = 92%
Term 1 Student Outcomes | 2024 | 2025 |
A% | 20.7% | 27% |
A-B% | 54.3% | 63.7% |
A-C% | 89.0% | 93% |
To support our continuous improvement, our leadership team has continued purposeful Learning Walks twice daily, engaging directly with students to better understand how learning is progressing in classrooms. Through five guiding questions, we capture the depth of their learning experience:
- What are you learning and why?
- How are you doing?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where do you go for help?
These conversations provide powerful insights into the student learning journey and help ensure teaching practices remain aligned with our high expectations.
We look forward to celebrating student growth and success as we wrap up Semester 1 and prepare for reporting and reflection.
Finally, a special mention to our Year 12 students, who continue to show dedication and focus. With just one term remaining, it will be exciting to see if they can carry their strong start right through to the finish line. See below for a glimpse into their impressive progress so far.
How are we going? - Year 12

𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝟴 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 – 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀!
Our Year 8 Science students have been hard at work exploring Earth Science! They’ve been investigating the different types of rocks, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, and learning how their properties change based on how they're formed and what minerals they contain.
Putting their knowledge to the test, students were challenged to identify unknown rock and mineral samples using their understanding of both physical and chemical properties. A hands-on and engaging way to build real-world science skills!
Great work, Year 8 scientists!

𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 – 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽
Our Open Boys Touch Football team represented the school with pride at Champs Day under perfect weather conditions.
The boys were outstanding both on and off the field – showing great behaviour, sportsmanship, and keeping themselves positively engaged between games.
Results:
Win vs Kingston – 15-0
Semi Final vs Stretton College – 4-5 (Stretton scored the win with just 30 seconds to go)
An incredible effort all round – well done boys!

𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽
On Friday, our Academy of Football Excellence teams took to the field against Loganlea SHS, and what a day it was! Years 7–9 Boys – 1-1 Draw
Years 7–9 Girls – 7-0 Win
All three teams played with confidence and flair, putting into action the tactical strategies they’ve been developing in training. The most impressive aspect? Their relentless work ethic, supporting each other both in and out of possession.
Another strong performance from our AoFX program. A big thank you to all the parents who came out to cheer on our teams, your support makes a difference!

𝗠𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹!
Three of Ormeau Woods SHS’s brightest legal minds from Year 12, Vanessa K, Brighton R, and Tayla C, recently took part in the Griffith Law School High School Mooting Competition, facing off against schools from across Queensland and northern NSW.
For their very first moot, our students were impressive! After a warm welcome from Dean of Law Professor Therese Wilson, they participated in a jury-style hypothetical case led by Dr Robyn Blewer, Director of the Innocence Project at Griffith University.
After lunch, our team went head-to-head with an experienced Ballina Coast High School team. Judged by Kirsty Paynter, a law lecturer at Griffith, our students earned high praise:
Special mention to Senior Counsel Vanessa for her confident responses to judicial questions
And to Junior Counsel Brighton for delivering a clear, well-structured argument
While narrowly edged out by their more experienced opponents, their score of 128/160 was an outstanding result for our first-time mooters.
A huge congratulations to Vanessa, Brighton, and Tayla! You’ve made Ormeau Woods proud and have taken an exciting step toward what may be a future career in law.

𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 – 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 7 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽
This week saw our Rugby League teams take to the field with passion, pride, and perseverance as they continue to grow both on and off the field.
Year 7/8 Titans Cup ~ Our Year 7/8 boys came up against a strong Marsden B side. Although they didn’t walk away with a win, the game highlighted areas to focus on – particularly defence and intensity. The team showed heart and determination until the final whistle.
Year 7 Struddy’s Cup ~ A dominant 20-8 win over Bellbird Park! Coaches were impressed, especially with the team’s potential. A special shout-out to Dylan A, returning from injury and earning Man of the Match for an incredible performance.
Year 9 Struddy’s Cup ~ The Year 9s showed great fight, coming from behind but falling just short 24-30 to Bellbird Park. Zavier W impressed defensively and earned Man of the Match, while Chase J had a standout debut with powerful runs and slick offloads in his first game for OWSHS.
Building Better Young Men ~ Off the field, we’re building resilience too. This week’s challenge? A 2-minute ice bath. While we hoped to build focus and determination, what we witnessed was even more powerful > the encouragement and comradery as the boys supported each other through the challenge.
We’re proud of their efforts and can’t wait for another week of growth and hard work. Let’s go Eagles!

𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗦 𝗟𝗘𝗢𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
On Thursday morning, our incredible Year 12 Lincs Leos members, Faith A, Brighton R, and Vanessa K, volunteered with Rosies Community Outreach before school, generously giving their time to serve hot drinks and breakfast to those in need.
Despite their already full schedules, these students chose to start their day by connecting with individuals in our community who are experiencing hardship or isolation.
All three students shared how meaningful the experience was and highly recommend this form of outreach to others. We're proud of their leadership and look forward to offering this opportunity to even more students in the future.
Well done, Faith, Brighton, and Vanessa, you’re making a real difference!

𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝟴 𝗥𝗟𝗠 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗣𝗦 – 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘!

Our talented Year 11 FTVNM students and the Year 11 & 12 Media Arts in Practice classes represented Ormeau Woods SHS at the first-ever BUFTA Student Seminar at Bond University! Students immersed themselves in the screen industry through incredible hands-on workshops in:
Game Development
Acting for Motion Capture
Stunt Performance
TV & Film Production
Screenwriting
They proudly upheld our OWSHS values throughout the day and took their first steps into a thriving creative industry, one that contributes over half a billion dollars annually to the Gold Coast economy!
What a day of inspiration, innovation, and industry insight!

𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿!
Year 10 student Holly I and Science teacher Miss Wallace were selected as representatives from the South East region to join a group of 60 Year 10 students and 10 teachers to participate in the Department of Education’s 2025 STEM Girl Power Camp, which was held on 19 - 23 May. Students travelled from all over Queensland to represent their school in Brisbane, where they participated in a variety of events, innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workshops, university visits to QUT and UQ and networking opportunities with experts from STEM fields.
Camp students met inspiring role models from diverse fields including, engineering, medicine, chemistry, quantum technologies and mathematical modelling. Camp students explored STEM pathways at an industry location of their choosing (either Cross River Rail, TechnologyOne, the Ecosciences Precinct or the Integrated Pathology Learning Centre) and discussed the importance of STEM communication at the Queensland Museum and Wheel of Brisbane. Students also participated in a variety of hands-on activities, including world-class biomedical research techniques at SPARQ-ed and led science activities with local primary school students.
The camp fostered students' understanding of STEM's significance in society while enhancing their leadership, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. As 2025 STEM Ambassadors, these students will now organise and deliver a STEM event during National Science Week in Term 3 (August 2025). This initiative aims to inspire others to pursue STEM subjects and careers.
The camp was a very memorable experience and a great way to interact with others who shared the same passion for STEM.

𝗡𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗗𝗦
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the latest Northern Collegiate meeting right here at Ormeau Woods SHS!
The Northern Collegiate brings together outstanding Year 10 students from schools across the Northern Gold Coast, including Coombabah, Pacific Pines, Helensvale, Upper Coomera, Pimpama, Foxwell, and of course, Ormeau Woods.
This session focused on developing public speaking skills, with a fantastic workshop led by guest presenter Mr Jenner.
But what truly set this event apart was a signature Ormeau Woods touch, our talented Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students catering the event! It was the first time this has ever been done for a Northern Collegiate meeting, and staff from other schools were seriously impressed, saying we’ve now “set the bar” for future events.
A huge thank you to our amazing Hospitality students and staff for the delicious food and top-notch service, and to our Northern Collegiate leaders and Ms Stevens for being exceptional hosts.
We’re proud to lead the way in not just learning, but in creating unforgettable experiences!

Endzone Cup Brings the Heat at Ormeau Woods!
Over two action-packed weeks, the 2025 Sports Pillar Endzone Cup lit up the MPC with incredible energy, fierce competition, and unforgettable moments!
The tournament featured daily lunchtime games, including a fun and fiery mid-week showdown between the Allstars and Teachers, which brought plenty of laughs and school spirit to the court with the teachers taking out the win.
Then came Grand Final Day, and what a finish it was! In an electrifying final match, the Crancakes and Hannahs battled it out in a high-energy showdown. With the score neck-and-neck right up to the final minute, the Crancakes pulled off a dramatic win to take the 2025 Endzone Cup title!
A massive congratulations to all teams for showcasing such incredible teamwork, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Special thanks to Jessica, our inspiring Sports Pillar Leader, and her outstanding support crew, Arki, Axel, and Elizabeth, for putting together such a brilliant event.
And of course, thank you to our amazing school community for turning up, cheering loud, and making the atmosphere absolutely electric.
Endzone Cup 2025 — what a game, what a crowd, what a win!

𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰!
A huge congratulations to all the incredible students and staff involved in our 2025 Music Night held on Friday!
It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout from our school community, coming together to support and celebrate our talented musicians. Our students lit up the stage with passion, confidence and pure talent, and were all absolute rock stars!

𝗞𝗼𝗸𝗼𝗱𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴!
Our dedicated Kokoda Challenge students took on a massive 36km beach walk as part of their training, and they smashed it! With the sun rising and the sand underfoot, these students and staff pushed through the distance. This was no easy feat, but every step brings them closer to being ready for the challenge ahead.
We’re so proud of their commitment and the way they continue to support and encourage each other on this journey.
Let’s cheer them on as they keep training for one of the toughest endurance events out there!

Student Success
We’re proud to celebrate Archie M from Year 8, for his participation in the Queensland Virtual STEM Academy – Maqueen Machines Skill Builder program.
Throughout this course, Archie developed essential 21st-century skills in robotics, using block coding platforms to program robots for a range of computational tasks. He explored how to think critically and creatively to solve problems, working with digital technologies in exciting and innovative ways.
Well done, Archie, on embracing the challenge and showing such fantastic commitment to STEM learning!

On Sunday 8 June, Year 8 Academy student Melodey B proudly represented Ormeau Woods SHS at the Queensland Schools Diving State Championships held at Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane.
Incredibly, Melodey only made the switch from competitive gymnastics (after 7 years!) to diving just 4 months ago, yet she’s already achieving amazing results! Training 8–10 hours each week, her dedication has paid off.
Melodey placed 4th overall in Queensland in the 14-year girls Springboard event from six dives and is now the first reserve for School Sport Nationals Diving.
What an outstanding achievement, we’re so proud of your hard work and talent!

Late last year, Seanna (Year 9) and Emily (Year 10) proudly trialled for and were selected to represent the Pimpama United Netball Association (PUNA) in their Senior State Age Representative Team for 2025, an extra special achievement, as it marked PUNA’s very first year fielding representative teams!
Since then, the girls have competed in multiple rep carnivals, culminating in the Netball Queensland Senior State Age Championships held in April. Competing against the best rep teams from across Queensland.
We are incredibly proud of both students for representing the northern Gold Coast, keep up the great work!

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of Axel V in Year 12, who was recently invited to referee at the U19 QSS Girls Championship held from 14–18 May!
Out of 19 referees across Queensland, only four were selected from South Coast, and Axel was one of them!
Over the 4-day tournament, Axel:
✅ Officiated 12 matches, gaining hands-on experience
✅ Was coached by A-League referees including Paige and Paula Malau-Aduli and Vicky Clark
✅ Worked with Football Queensland referee coordinator Adam Humphries
✅ Refereed a semi-final match
✅ Was appointed 4th Official for the Grand Final – a huge honour!
This was an incredible opportunity to grow and develop alongside professionals in the sport, and Axel made the most of every moment.
Well done, Axel!

A huge congratulations to Robert (Year 10) and Ngatai (Year 9) who have achieved an incredible milestone in their baseball journey!
After competing in a tournament in New Zealand earlier this year, both students have been selected to represent the New Zealand region at the Babe Ruth Baseball World Series later this year.
Robert will compete in the 16U World Series in Branson, Missouri.
Ngatai will take the field in the 14U World Series in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Well done, Robert and Ngatai, we can’t wait to follow your journey and hear all about your incredible experience!

𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦
A huge congratulations to Eve M from Year 8 who recently achieved an incredible milestone, earning her 1st Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo!
Eve successfully completed her grading on May 25, after six years of dedication and training with Australian Defensive Tactics.
This is a remarkable achievement that showcases Eve’s discipline, and commitment. We’re so proud of you, Eve, well done!

P&C News
Happy End of Term Students, Parents, Teachers and Canteen!
Where has it gone already?
A big shout out to Mel and the Canteen Team for another successful term of awesome service, supporting kids and school alike. Your dedication to ensuring everyone is served high quality and nutritious food is legendary amongst our local schools. Thank you!
The P&C is on task and on budget. We have provided support for a number of programs so far this year including:
* Running Club
* Kokoda Challenge
* Year 7 Camp
* Music Program
Plus, at our recent meeting held on Monday 16 June, we discussed:
* Site improvement plan - School and P&C will be involved with the Community Oval Upgrade planning project
* The funds promised at the last state election for shade and seating update - planned completion April 2026
* Water fountains - we are investigating having these installed before the hot season
* Red Food Day Planning
* and other possible future opportunities.
Recently, P&C QLD held a conference and a few of the P&C Team were able to attend. It was a great way to see what others are doing and to learn more about how we can grow as a P&C. Several of the sessions were management level training seminars such was the quality of the program. Lots of learnings to bring back home!
There was a notable observation by us as well. Our School / P&C Team, together, are in the top 10% for the state in terms of effectiveness, solidarity and focus. We were thankful for those who have worked for many years before us to help build our School / P&C Team to where it is and hope to continue in the same way.
P&C QLD’s motto is “Every Child, Every Chance”. This really resonated with those that attended. It cuts to the core of what we are about. Repeat it a few times to yourself whilst you reflect on what really matters for our kids. It is catchy and brings into perspective the important things.
Hopefully you have seen the latest update on the school social's - We have added a new payment method for the Canteen - students can pay with their student card via Flexischools.

We’re excited to announce that students can now make over-the-counter purchases at the canteen using their Student ID Card!
Parents can easily add funds through the Flexischools app to their child's school ID card, and even set daily spending limits and auto top-ups for peace of mind.
It’s a simple, secure way to ensure your child eats well at school while giving you full visibility of their purchases. Students can also check their balance with canteen staff during breaks.
We encourage all families to jump on board and take advantage of this added convenience, just another way we’re simplifying school life! Not yet on Flexischools? Get started today at www.flexischools.com.au
Why is this important? The Canteen aims to ensure every child gets fed and enjoys their break time. That means the Canteen does its best to serve students as fast as possible and make it quick and easy to get through the line. Failed payments or cash slow this process down. But we must maintain school policy regarding no mobile phones, even for food payment in the Canteen. So enabling as many payment methods as possible makes it easier. We accept cash, debit card, credit card, Flexischools pre-order and now Flexischools connected student ID. The big advantage for the latter is that: Students must have their student ID with them, it is photo ID secure, parents can load as much as they are comfortable with onto the card, and parents can review purchases with their child to have this “is this the best choice” conversations. Please reach out if you have questions about Canteen payment methods.
Finally, a thank you the P&C Exec Team - your hard work to support our 'Why' and our actions is appreciated.
I hope you would consider joining us at one of our meetings. We are made stronger by a diversity of members. I hope to see you at our next meeting 5.30pm Monday 21 July (the third Monday of the month) Week 2 of Term 3.
Have an Awesome Day!

TOP BLOKES
A big shoutout to our Year 7 students who have just successfully completed the Stepping Up program.
Stepping Up program (Top Blokes) aims to assist in Improving young male health and well-being.
Top Blokes work with groups of boys and young men to increase their resilience, empathy, and respect for self and others, and in doing so work to reduce the rates of suicides, mental health issues, antisocial and risk-taking behaviours.
The goal of the program is to mentor and develop their critical-thinking and decision-making skills, as well as normalise a definition of masculinity beyond "strong" and "stoic" to improve young men's relationships with themselves and those around them.

If you feel that your child is struggling at school with social, emotional or behavioural issues, and could benefit from participating in a group program, or you would like to access individual support for them, please contact the school and ask for the Guidance officer Phillippa Proctor (Years 8, 10, 12) or Ruby Farley (Years 7, 9, 11).

Please take a moment to review our Attendance Policy within the Student Code of Conduct and follow the correct procedures at all times, including when arriving late to school.
If a student will be absent or late for any reason, a parent or guardian must notify the school using one of the following methods:
📞 Call the Absence Line: (07) 5540 9266
📲 Send a Text Message: 0427 248 087
📧 Email: absences@ormeauwoodsshs.eq.edu.au
If a student is absent without prior notification, a text message will be sent to parents/guardians. If you receive this message, please respond directly with the student’s name, and reason for the absence.
Your cooperation helps us maintain accurate attendance records.

Early pick up Process
If you know you will be collecting your student/s up early, please arrange a Leave Request, or phone ahead to advise you are on your way to collect a student. This saves on waiting times and interruptions on class learning.
Leave Requests can be arranged at the office by both students and parents. Information needed is; the reason for the early pickup, and the time the student/s is/are needed at the office for collection.
We can then issue a 'Leave Request' pass.
(Note: if parents call or email, please remind your child to come to the Student Window to collect their Leave Request).
Students can then show their teacher the Leave Request, and at the nominated time come and wait at the office for your arrival.
Parents MUST still come to the office (Student Counter/Window at the back of Administration) and sign students out before they leave school grounds.
Please call (07) 5540 9222 or email info@ormeauwoodsshs.eq.edu.au if you have any questions
