O-News 16 August 2024
From the Principal's Desk

Dear Ormeau Woods Community,
Thank you to all of our families who actively engaged in the SET planning process with our Year 10 students this term. It was great to see so many parents take the opportunity to join the conversations with their child in Year 10 to discuss their career aspirations and subject preferences with our dedicated team of educators and career advisors. This process is very valuable and creates the conditions for our students to be successful in their senior years of high school.
The Annual School Opinion Survey closes TODAY! All parents will have received an email from the Department of Education with a link to access and complete the survey. The school opinion survey is a great opportunity to provide feedback about our school to let us know what is working really well and what can be further improved at Ormeau Woods. Thank you to everyone who has completed the survey and provided feedback already. This will be used to plan for further school improvement and the whole school experience of your child at Ormeau Woods State High School.
It has been excellent to award students with recognition for their efforts in learning achievement, effort, behaviour and attendance throughout the term. This term students have received principal awards for their academic achievement of all A’s and B’s on their semester reports. Students who achieved higher than our school benchmarks in effort and behaviour were awarded prestigious ASPIRE awards and had the opportunity to attend the Ekka Show in Brisbane this week. Next week I have the privilege of hosting the Principal’s Honours Breakfast for every student and their families, years 7-12 who achieved all A’s in every subject on their Semester Report card. As you know from the last newsletter, overall our students are thriving in their learning. We are continuing to further improve the quality of teaching and learning at Ormeau Woods. Our Head of School Mr Silcock will share more about our current learning improvement priorities in his section of this newsletter.
Warm regards,
Dan Murtas
Principal

Meet the Staff

Michelle Wilson - Head of Department Arts
This is my eleventh year in Education, my third as a Head of Department and in this role, leading the Arts Faculty at Ormeau Woods State High School. My role at Ormeau Woods focuses on supporting the Arts team to empower and inspire students through fun and creative learning, igniting their passion for success in dynamic industries beyond their schooling years. Our shared approach to building industry prepared future artists revolves around providing students with innovative and integrated learning experiences that facilitate the building of industry connections, preparing students for successful careers.
Throughout my professional years, I have worked across a variety of creative fields, specialising in Music, Instrumental Music (strings) and Choral pedagogy across both primary and secondary settings. Additionally, as a vocal specialist (classical singing and musical theatre), performer and musician, I have produced and directed a variety of musicals and productions within a P-12 school context. Beyond curriculum responsibilities, I have been actively involved in music education enrichment opportunities for students, including engagements with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music – Griffith University as an ensemble director for the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP). Additionally, I work closely with both the Australian String Association (AUSTA) and the Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts (HOTA), contributing to these organisation’s education reference groups.
I’m looking forward to continuing my support of our students at Ormeau Woods in their artistic pursuits. We have some incredibly talented students at this school that are continually impressing our team with their artistic skills. Some of the incredible work from across every Arts discipline this year will be on display at this year’s Arts in the Woods event, scheduled for Friday 11 October. We look forward to seeing the Ormeau Woods community there to celebrate our students’ achievements.

Jessica Reilly - Dance Teacher
I have been teaching since 2018, starting my venture at OWSHS in 2022. I have always loved dance since the minute I could walk and find so much joy in supporting young dancers to achieve their dream career goals. If I am not busy choreographing, planning or performing I am running a muck with my three gorgeous boys Carter, Ol Bear and Ryder. They certainly keep me on my toes.

Alyssa Gill - Arts Teacher
I started my teaching career this term at OWSHS with The Arts Department. I was previously a teacher aide and worked with the amazing R2N team for the better part of 2 years. Being a teacher aide whist studying was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I cannot understate the value of the experiences that I gained and support I received from the R2N team. I am currently teaching a full load of Visual Arts and wouldn’t have it any other way. When I’m not teaching, I love movies, games, reading and volleyball! You can always catch me at the staff vs students practise matches!

Ben Fones - Arts Teacher
I was born in a place called Wolverhampton in central England. I came to Australia with my family in March 2023 and started teaching at Ormeau Woods at the start of Term 3 in 2023. Here at OWSHS I teach Visual Arts, Media Arts and Film, Television and new media. I have been an arts teacher for 5 years teaching visual arts in the UK before moving to Australia, prior to that I was a professional photographer for around 16 years. In my spare time I love spending time with my family and exploring the Gold Coast, the beach is by far my favourite place to spend time. I coach and play football (soccer) and enjoy watching my boyhood club West Bromwich Albion when they don’t kick off at 2am anyway.

Six of our Year 11 students were invited to attend Southern Cross University for the 'Empowering Young Women in Leadership Masterclass', hosted by The Gold Coast Women in Business Awards.
They were privileged to hear from successful female leaders who shared their experiences, insights and advice around the topics of wellbeing, purpose, leadership, connections and pathways to success.
The students left feeling empowered to embrace leadership opportunities and feeling a greater sense of understanding in their individual journeys.
On reflection, the students shared some of their key takeaways:
- Living your purpose is different for everyone, you don’t need to follow the path of others just because you don’t know where to go,
- Don't be afraid of failure as success comes from overcoming challenges,
- Seek help and support from others as you aren't expected to know or do everything.
It was an absolute pleasure accompanying them to this event.

On Tuesday 6 August, our Year 12 students came together to celebrate the countdown to their graduation. Just 100 days left until they embark on the next exciting chapter of their lives!
We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you. Your hard work has brought you to this point, and we can't wait to see the amazing things you will achieve in the future. Keep pushing forward, enjoy these last 100 days, and make the most of every moment.

Our students have been excelling in the exciting field of algorithm design and application. Recently, they took on the challenge of developing algorithms to solve real-life problems, such as marking out the base for a tepee.
Through this hands-on project, students applied their skills in creating, testing, and refining algorithms. They received valuable feedback from their teachers, allowing them to refine and improve their processes. This exercise not only enhanced their problem-solving abilities but also demonstrated the practical relevance of algorithmic thinking in everyday situations.
We are proud of our students' dedication and creativity in tackling these challenges and look forward to their continued growth in this area.

Our Academy of Media Industries students had an incredible opportunity to work with two impressive Lamborghinis! These stunning machines served as the perfect subjects for our students to photograph and video, allowing them to create a professional marketing package for MPRESV as part of their curriculum.
Even our Principal, Mr Murtas, couldn't resist joining in the fun, revving these beasts to the red line, all in the name of helping the project, of course!
We thank MPRESV for bringing their cars for us to use and look forward to welcoming them back in the future, giving our Academy of Media Industries students even more hands-on experiences with these amazing vehicles. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

The Ormeau Woods SHS Year 7/8 eSports team competed at the Fuse Mariokart Cup on Tuesday. The competition pits 4 drivers alongside AI drivers racing against each other. With offensive and defensive items anything can, and did, happen including falling from first place to last in a number of seconds.
The Ormeau Woods students fared well in the early stages with Ty getting narrowly knocked out in the time trial stage. Harris was knocked out in the quarterfinals where he lost by 2 points. Reid and Charlie went to the grand final against Emmanuel College and St. Stephens College.
Reid and Charlie made us proud by taking home second and first place, respectively. Charlie will go on to represent Ormeau Woods SHS at the State Championships in November, and the National Finals if he wins.
Congratulations team on an outstanding effort and good luck at the State Championships Charlie!

This production will be broadcast by Channel 9 in a few months’ time, so stay tuned for further information.

Our Tu Tangata students have been participating in the Tuhono program each Wednesday during RLM. It is designed to engage students of all ages to empower diverse communities with a Māori worldview, provided through the Mozzy Foundation.
The program begins with a blessing spoken by all participants in Te Reo Māori, and all students are encouraged to introduce themselves in Te Reo Māori. Māori students are further encouraged to introduce themselves along their traditional Wakas, Pepehas, and Marae their ancestors come from.
Tuhono focuses on building connections, boosting confidence, and discovering the essence of leadership. It promotes respect for ourselves, each other, and our surroundings. This program offers a valuable opportunity for students to come together, deepen their knowledge, and celebrate their traditions.

P&C Update
Greetings from your P&C!
First, a reminder of our future meetings. We hope to see you there to help us make important decisions in supporting students and the school.
- Tuesday 20 August 5.30pm - In the board room in the Admin building
- Tuesday 10 September…. No general meeting but see below
- Tuesday 15 October 5.30pm - In the board room in the Admin building
- Tuesday 19 November 5.30pm - In the board room in the Admin building
Second, please take time to consider supporting a petition raised by one of our members that requests our State Government to support our school with critical infrastructure, as follows:
- Extension of the existing multipurpose centre and the construction of a purpose-built gym facility,
- Installation of more shade, seating and landscaping around the school oval,
- Addition of shade structures across the entire school will protect students from harmful UV rays and create more comfortable outdoor learning and recreational spaces.
The petition link is here: https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Petitions/Petition-Details?id=4122
Please hurry though, this petition closes Sunday 18 August.
Third, in the last newsletter, we mentioned we were on a shortlist for a $5m grant to build an expansion for the MPC.
Unfortunately, we have found out since then that we were unsuccessful in this funding grant.
This project was the focal point of the P&C for recent years and with this result, it is time that we revisit our focus, considering questions like:
What is the purpose of the P&C?
Why are we here?
Why would parents and staff and the community support the P&C?
In support of this, the P&C Executive will be running a workshop to help determine our Why.
Our plan is:
- Workshop in the Resource Center - 5pm Tuesday 10 September (week 10 of this term),
- This is open to all P&C members, plus all parents of current students, and staff,
- We are aiming to get input to our Why,
- This will be a moderated workshop,
- It is expected that all attendees will support our central School Value - Respect,
- The P&C Executive are hosting and hope that your passion for the school and the students will be respectively brought out,
- We reserve the right to respectively request attendees to kindly withdraw if this value is unduly breached,
- We request that each attendee (by single or by group) bring a plate so we can focus on the workshop without concern about being hungry (BYO non-alcoholic drinks),
- We would appreciate an RSVP along with a notion of your plate (sweet or savoury) so we know we are covered pandc@ormeauwoodsshs.eq.edu.au
Fourth, the Canteen has been going from strength to strength. Mel and the Team have continued to provide awesome food, service and support for students and staff. Cold days make for a strong appreciation of tasty warm food and friendly smiles. Plus the new afternoon opening time to support after school activities has been a hit with all.
Remember you can order online for the canteen if needed.
Thank you to our Canteen Staff for your wonderful support.
Lastly, the P&C has supported a number of students in representing their sport at state and national levels in the last few months, including:
- Emma, national diving,
- Katie, national artistic skating,
- Sienna, national boxing,
- Jacob, international boxing.
We hope to see you soon to help support the P&C into the future.
Cheers,
Rob Newton
P&C Secretary
