Head of School Update
As we come to the end of another exciting term, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on all that has happened over the past few months and look ahead to what is coming next term.
Term 3 Highlights
Pathway Planning for Students
This term, we worked closely with students and families to plan for the future. Our Year 10 cohort took full advantage of the scheduled SET Plan meetings, where they discussed career aspirations and mapped out pathways to achieve their goals.
Students in Years 8 and 9 engaged in subject selection talks with Heads of Department for all curriculum subjects, helping them make informed decisions about their academic journeys.
NAPLAN 2024 Results
We are proud to announce the receipt of the 2024 NAPLAN results.
While our Year 7 cohort faced challenges in comparison to state and regional results, our Year 9 students have continued to outperform their peers across both the State and Region.
Of particular note was the performance of our Year 9 boys, who outperformed schools across the nation in reading and Queensland State and Regional schools in writing and numeracy. In comparison to national gender trends in education the year 9 boys bucked recent trends in performance.
Our analysis confirms that we are achieving more than a year's learning growth for a year's teaching.
International Partnerships
We continue to build strong international partnerships, providing opportunities for both overseas students to experience Australian life and culture and for our students to extend their knowledge beyond our shores.
Recently, I had the pleasure of witnessing the maturity and respect for learning from a visiting Indonesian school, Lab School from Jakarta. Their visit highlighted the enriching experiences that such international collaborations bring to our school community.
Coming Up in Term 4
Year 12 External Examinations
In Term 4, Year 12 students will undertake their external examinations, which will support them in achieving their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR). Considerable work by both students and staff will culminate in this critical period, reflecting their dedication and preparation throughout the year. We are quietly confident in maintaining our 100% QCE and achieving our first 99.00 ATAR.
Transition Programs
We will be continuing our transition programs with our primary partner schools to ensure a smooth transition for students moving to high school. This year, we are excited to extend our transition efforts by including a day visit to the high school for Year 5 students.
Celebration Opportunities
We are looking forward to celebrating our students’ achievements with the community through upcoming events. The Night of Excellence on 13th November will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of our students, followed by the Graduation Ceremony on 14th November, where we will honour the accomplishments of our graduating class.
I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday, and I look forward to welcoming all students back for another exciting term of learning and growth.

I’ve worked as a Guidance Officer in Roma middle & high schools and serviced a host of smaller schools in the district such as Keebra Park SHS, Rockhampton SHS, and Woodridge SHS. In my spare time, I like to spend it with the family, road cycling, mountain biking and camping.
Part of the service we offer to students include:

Hayley Radu - School Chappie
As school Chaplain I'm available to support the social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of students, staff and families.
You'll find me on campus Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Before joining the Ormeau Woods team, I was a Chaplain in Melbourne SE suburbs, so most of my family is down there!
In my spare time I love spending time with my friends and my husband, which usually means getting together for walks, reading and praying together.
I also have a cat named Nala which is the cutest cat you will ever see, guaranteed.
Simon Pyle - Student Support Officer
I support and assist students with any concerns or challenges they may have both at school and outside of the school gates.
All students from all year levels are welcome to come and chat with me, there is no judgement, and all students are treated the same!
In my role I coordinate school support programs and any relevant events for the Health Hub such as – Bullying Zero Day, Mental Health Week and RU OK Day.
In my previous life, I worked in the entertainment industry for a very long time and for the last 5 years I have been a practicing and accredited mental health counsellor.
In my spare time I love going to the beach, bush walking, gardening, reading, live music and most of all finding cafés that serve speciality coffee with delicious food options.
Evan Da Costa - Health Hub Teacher Aide
Hey, I’m Evan Da Costa, a dedicated Teacher Aide in the Health Hub department. Before joining this team, I spent 7 years working in the R2N (Response to Need) department, where I had the privilege of supporting students with disabilities. I’m passionate about helping students reach their full potential and I strive to create a supportive, inclusive and fun environment. Outside of work, I enjoy connecting with nature, spending time with friends, and creating travel films.
Shannon Solomona - Indigenous Liaison Officer

I am the Indigenous Liaison Officer - I support all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and families. I help the students with in class support, social and emotional wellbeing, Cultural identity as well as opportunities for work, study and scholarships.
I enjoy working with students to be the best version of themselves not only at school but also in life. Every student has the potential, it's just harder to find in some and takes some extra support. 😊
When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
Sally Young - Health Hub Administration
Before transitioning to the Health Hub/RC admin role I was an R2N (then SSS) TA. I really enjoyed this roll & supporting our SWD as they overcome their daily challenges, but, when given the opportunity to work with students Mental Health I jumped at the chance as my future goal is to become a youth worker.
Outside of work nothing fills my cup more than doing life & making memories by exploring, or "sploring", with my nearly 3-year-old son Zion. If I'm not doing that you can find me treating my tastes buds at an incredible cafe/restaurant with good company, which would more often than not be followed by a show at QPAC.
Nat Wingett - Mission Australia
I work for Mission Australia’s Reconnect program. I support young people to tackle issues in their lives; improve their family relationships and maintain their participation in education, employment, and the community.
Prior to working for Mission Australia, I worked as a case manager at a specialist homelessness service in multiple programs to support young people, adults and families who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
In my spare time I like to go hiking, play my guitar and listen to some vinyl.

Last week marked a fantastic kickoff to our 2025 Academy of Soccer Excellence Program! We were thrilled to welcome Year 6 students for a training session alongside our current Year 7 Ormeau Woods students.
The day began with our Year 8/9 team hosting a high-energy training session with ProPlayer. Despite the unseasonably hot weather, our students showed remarkable determination and gave it their all.
In the afternoon, to beat the heat, the Year 6/7 students moved indoors to the MPC, where they enjoyed a dynamic Futsal session with Feenix Futsal. We’re excited to have Feenix Futsal as a new partner, providing regular sessions for all Soccer Academy students.
This is just the beginning of what promises to be an incredible year on the pitch!

Over the past few weeks, our Senior Hospitality students have showcased their incredible skills by hosting a 4-course fine dining experiences at the Goldmine Café. Artwork - "Splash"
Acrylic Paint and Paint Marker on Canvas ~ 60.9 x 91.4cm
Artist Statement: Sport is one of the most popular industries in the world. It brings people and communities together to support a team or athlete in their pursuit of victory. Athletes are idolised by fans all around the world, but also face some of the harshest criticism. My painting explores the challenges and adversity experiences by an athlete who is considered a legend. “Splash” focuses on Stephen Curry through a monochrome lens, foregrounding both the highs and lows experienced by worldclass athletes.
Congratulations Keira S
Artwork - "The Dawn of Bloom"
Plaster on Canvas ~ 60.9 x 91.4cm
Artist Statement: In my upcoming project, “The Dawn of Blooming,” I strive to illuminate the paths of women as they break free from societal constraints. Through heartfelt conversations with my peers, I’ve captured the resilience and strength of women challenging outdated expectations. It’s time to shift the narrative and empower women to take their well-deserved place in every aspect of society. This art piece serves as a powerful call to action, urging society to embrace and uplift women in their pursuit of equality and empowerment, calling out the objectification and criticism that women endure. Let’s inspire change by joining together and reshaping the narrative, fostering a future where women are valued, respected, and empowered to flourish.
Congratulations Ava S
Artwork - "A journey through teenage waves"
Acrylic Paint on Canvas ~ 30cm x 30cm
Artist Statement: Each artwork portrays the tumultuous, yet transforming phases of teenage years, from the initial childhood memories; where waterfalls poured, and butterflies blessed our presence; Though life becomes destructive once choosing the wrong path. Where mountains begin to lose its colour, where the sky is dark and cloudy, where your figure is disoriented, fading away. In the end, those dark moments are a pivotal period of one’s journeys that shape a person, leading them to self-discovery, finding their true beauty.
And last but certainly not least, Congratulations to Charlotte C who was also selected for consideration and accepted to feature in this year's exhibition.
It is a free event, and everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate Charlotte's success!
"Flightless Birds"
Wire installation
Artist Statement: noun: solitude1. the state or situation of being alone. In my work, I explore feelings of self-imposed isolation, focusing on the human capacity to be both the prison and prisoner of our minds. Here, wire birds hang eerily in an imitation of life— frozen in a stasis of suspended flight. They appear delicate yet dangerous, as their wings fray into jagged barbs, leaving you wondering if they were ever truly flying, or simply caught in a perpetual free-fall.
Come and see more amazing student work from throughout the year at Ormeau Woods State High School’s Arts in The Woods showcase on Friday 11 October.

Students in Year 9 science have had a busy term studying physics and investigating different energy forms. They have conducted a variety of practicals to investigate heat, light and sound energy. Students investigated why different objects produce different sounds based on the sound waves produced. They investigated various mechanisms of heat transfer including: radiation, conduction and convection and were surprised to see how different these were despite all achieving the same result of heating an object.
Great work Year 9!

Our 2025 Academy of Rugby League students gathered for an exciting immersion day with Ben Hannant to prepare for the year ahead. We were thrilled to welcome the selected Year 6 students who will be joining the academy, alongside some of our senior students who lent their expertise during the female session. It was a fantastic day of teamwork and skill-building across all groups.
To top it off, our junior Year 7/8 side played their final Titans Cup game, finishing an impressive 7th out of 30 teams in their first competition. What an achievement! Well done team, we’re excited to see how you continue to grow in the years to come.

The highly anticipated annual Year 12 v Teachers Futsal match was nothing short of exhilarating! The Year 12s came out strong, leading by 2 goals, and it looked like they might finally break the teachers' winning streak. However, the teachers found their rhythm, staging a remarkable comeback to secure a 6-2 victory.
Well done to everyone who took part in this fast-paced, high-energy game. It was a fantastic match!

This term in Visual Arts the Year 10 students are studying perspectives, focusing on macro and abstract forms within nature. They created their own primary sources by staging and photographing their chosen forms and are now experimenting with gouache paint. We look forward to seeing their finished artworks at our upcoming arts showcase: Arts in the Woods: 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟭𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰!
𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗬𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗗𝗦
It's been an exciting build-up to this year’s Senior Schools Cup, with our teams sharpening their skills through friendlies against Beenleigh SHS, Upper Coomera State College, Windaroo SHS, and even some intense teacher vs. student matches.
At the start of August our Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams went to compete in the Senior Volleyball Schools Cup. These were hotly contested matches against some strong specialist schools in both pools, and our teams came away from the three days with valuable experience and made lasting friendships along the way. We are looking forward to tweaking and enhancing our skills and strategies so we can come back stronger next year!
As always, our students represented Ormeau Woods SHS with pride, supported by their amazing coaches, and had an unforgettable experience.
𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗦 𝗣𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗘
What an exhilarating few days it has been as our 6 houses faced off in the annual Sports Pillar Challenge!
The action kicked off last week with Volleyball, where Janehn and Tintara gave it their all but unfortunately couldn't maintain their position after the first day. Next up was Netball, where Bundari and Zambuca battled fiercely in the opening game, with Bundari clinching the win. In the following match Yabara was unable to field a team, allowing Zambuca to re-enter the competition against Roxinho. Zambuca fought hard and secured a thrilling one-point victory.
Today's futsal showdown between Bundari and Zambuca was intense, fast-paced and full of energy. The match ended in a nail-biting penalty shootout, with Zambuca sealing the win on their fourth shot.
A huge shoutout to Sports Leader Dylan M for his dedication in organising the competition, and to the staff and students who assisted with refereeing. It was fantastic to see so much house spirit and sportsmanship from all the teams and supporters!
𝗙𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗
Our Year 12 Fashion class is buzzing with creativity as students dive into their final assessment, Adornment.
Inspired by the iconic "Fashions on the Field" from the Melbourne Cup, each student is designing unique pieces tailored to specific clients, dress styles, and colour palettes.
The enthusiasm in the room is absolutely infectious, and we can’t wait to showcase the stunning final creations!
P&C Update
Greetings from your P&C!
Thank you to those who attended the 'Why' meeting.
Missing out on the MPC expansion funding, which was our primary focus as a P&C, means that we needed to reconsider our future plans.
We discussed:
What is the purpose of the P&C?
Why are we here?
Why would parents and staff and the community support the P&C?
We look forward to sharing our findings with you next term.
A recent key investment to the school from the P&C was the renewal of the fleet of loan iPads.
The P&C was foundational in its support of the original iPad program and after seven years, it was time to renew this investment in student learning excellence.
A shout out to one of the P&C’s long term fundraising efforts: the Entertainment Book program. Special thank you to Christine for her long-term support through this program. Check it out at Ormeau Woods State High School P&C Association (entertainment.com.au)
Other items that we are considering for Term 4
- Chilled water fountains at the school
- Running Club/ Kokoda Program for 2025
- Improved Canteen facilities
A heads up to all Parents ~ P&C Queensland is encouraging all P&Cs and parents to support the Hand's up for Kids campaign – the need for increased funding of $600 per student, per year to support families.
Here are the details:
As you would be aware, the burden on parents and guardians is continuing to grow, with studies showing the average educational cost to parents has increased to between $3,800 and $4,700 per child in some Queensland state schools. These additional expenses include essential items for a modern education, such as uniforms, digital devices, excursions, various sports and music, etc.
The $600 per child per year for 3 years Hands up for Kids campaign will not only provide cost of living relief for parents and guardians at a time when rising costs are impacting household budgets, but also reduce cost as a barrier and ensure a quality education.
Our proposal is simple and effective, delivering immediate relief to families across the state and targeted on essential items. P&C Qld is also well placed to execute this initiative with localised reach in every community across Queensland via our network of P&C Associations and this ensures parents have a say in how this is spent.
As you are aware there are currently about 570,000 students enrolled in Queensland state schools, with that number expected to increase by another 15 per cent by the end of the decade.
It is vital this commitment by all political parties be delivered immediately.
But we need your help to be heard!
Visit our website to find helpful tips and resources about how we can all work together to get our message out to your local MPs and candidates in the run up to the 26 October poll. It’s time to start thinking about the best ways to contact your local candidate or MPs and tell them how $600 per student, per year will make a difference for your family.
As Term 3 comes to a close, it has been great to see the positive impact Mel and The Team in the Canteen have on students and the school. They ran one of the ever-popular Red Food Days recently and catered for last week’s Dance Showcase Evenings. With the success of the single afternoon opening this term, the plan is to expand this to two days a week. Remember, you can order online through Flexischools for the canteen.
Thank you to our fabulous Canteen Staff!
Finally, a reminder of our future meetings. We hope to see you there to help us make important decisions in supporting students and the school.
- Tuesday 15th October 5.30pm - Administration Office
- Tuesday 19th November 5.30pm - Administration Office
